3. Managing flood water
Why?
There is now little doubt that climate change brought about by human activity, especially through the burning of fossil fuels, is causing increasingly stormy weather in the UK. Heavy rainfall in Addingham leads to rapid runoff from both agricultural land and impermeable village surfaces. High flow in our becks causes soil erosion, basement flooding, especially along Main St., and the flooding of low-lying fields. Sewers become over-loaded causing untreated wastewater to be discharged into the Mill Stream at Low Mill.
How?
- First and foremost we should all be taking steps to tackle climate change by reducing our carbon footprint. See for example: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/stories/climate-action/
- If you are a landowner, use natural flood management (NFM) methods to slow the flow of surface water from our local hillslopes. See https://www.ydrt.org.uk/what-we-do/nfm/
- If you are a property owner living in the village use Sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) to slow the flow of surface water from your property. See: https://www.local.gov.uk/topics/severe-weather/flooding/sustainable-drainage-systems
- If you think your property could be affected by flooding sign up to the Governments free flood warning service: https://www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings
- Take precautions to protect your property from flooding and flood damage. See https://www.bradford.gov.uk/emergencies/flooding/protecting-your-property/
- Obtain insurance against floodwater damage. See https://www.gov.uk/prepare-for-flooding/get-insurance
